Athletes traveled from all over the country to compete in sunny Puerto Rico at AAU's Smoke on the Island

PUERTO RICO (April 3, 2023) – Vive Boricua! AAU Track and Field went to the islands of Puerto Rico as 684 athletes competed in front of 4,000 spectators at AAU Track and Field’s Smoke on the Island meet this past weekend. Athletes took their marks in Coliseo Guillermo Angulo, in beautiful Carolina, Puerto Rico.
With 221 athletes traveling from outside of Puerto Rico and 463 runners coming from all around the islands of Puerto Rico, the event brought runners from all over to compete. California, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Louisiana, Maryland, Missouri, North Carolina, Ohio, Virgin Islands, and Puerto Rico were all represented.
Located in the northern coast, Carolina, Puerto Rico was the perfect bright and sunny spot for a track and field event. Athletes were divided into eight divisions for the event: 5-7 years old, 8-9 years old, 10-11 years old, 12-13 years old, 14-15 years old, 16-17 years old, 18-19 years old, and 20 and up.
The track meet featured events for both male and female competitors. Sprints, relays, distance running, and field events all caught the eye of the audience.
Sprints: 100m, 200m, 400m
Distance: 800m, 15000m
Relay: 4x100, 4x100 mixed relay, 4x400, 4x400 mixed relay
Field Events: long jump, turbo-javelin, javelin throw, shot put, high jump
Awards were represented to athletes who finished 1st – 3rd place in both individual events, and teams in relay events.
