CHARLOTTE, Tenn. (November 30, 2021) – More than 2,000 participants, including approximately 200 from the state of North Carolina, will take their marks at the 2021 AAU Cross Country National Championships this weekend in Charlotte, North Carolina on Saturday, December 4, 2021.
Athletes will race through the Larry McAfee 5K Championship Cross Country Course at McAlpine Creek Ashe Park, a multi-use park with hiking and biking trails, an oudoor fitness center and off-leash dog park.
This premier cross country national championship attracts runners from across the nation with 38 states and Puerto Rico represented this year in Charlotte.
“We are excited about the numbers at the 2021 AAU Cross Country Nationals,” said Chad Culver, Meet Director. “We look forward to welcoming the more than 2000 athletes and their families to the Charlotte, North Carolina area.”
It is Charlotte's second time hosting the event, generating the 4th largest participant turn-out since 2000. Only Orlando, Florida (2001, 2006), and Knoxville, Tennesee (2018) drew more participants in the past 18 years. These athletes, coaches, parents and friends will bring an estimated economic impact of $1 million to the local businesses in the Charlotte area.
“Our goal is to provide the very best participation opportunities to AAU athletes in an event atmosphere that parents, family and friends can also enjoy.” said Charles “Coach O” Oliver, AAU Track & Field National Chair. “The AAU Nationals continues to raise the standard for what a cross country event should look like.”
